Sam, Soccer, Worship?

Staying Encouraged with WM Staff

Worship? Outside of Sundays?

I grew up thinking worship was something that happened before the pastor would get up and preach. I had no idea how wrong this is. I finally became aware of how worship can happen as we do anything in our lives. I learned how to worship while I play soccer and how to worship as I am going throughout my day. It has been a really cool experience to learn how to take a bunch of things that I love to do and use them as an act of worship.

There are two things that helped me get to a better place of understanding when it comes to worship.

The first thing is Romans 12:1, which says,

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

I began to think that if Jesus could offer his body as THE living sacrifice that offered me eternity with him, then I should be able to live my life in such a way that is for the Lord. The biggest misconception I had when I started learning this is that I cannot do anything that I enjoy (soccer, biking, hanging out with friends) because I needed to live a life that is holy and acceptable to God. How silly of me to think God would give me passions in life that I could not do because it was not holy or pleasing to him. So I learned how to instead use the things that I love to honor and glorify him as an act of worship.

The second thing that helped me understand worship better is realizing I can choose to worship God or his creation/people in His creation. We were made to worship something, so if I choose to not use my life to worship the Lord, I will find something else to worship. I think this was a hard pill to swallow because it reminded me of Romans 1:18-25 which says,

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”

This is a bit more extreme than what is going on in my life, but the concept remains from Exodus 20:

“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

I want to make sure that I am always worshipping the Creator and not allowing myself to worship any other gods in my life.

Worshipping is something that is so important and I want to make sure that I am aware of how easy it is to worship anyone or anything. I want to stay constant in offering my body as a living sacrifice to the Lord of what is holy and pleasing to be my act of worship to the Lord.

What’s something in your daily life you can turn into an act of worship?

Cassi: What is your favorite verse?

Charley: Song of Songs 4:7 "You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you."

Cassi: Why did you want to be a GIT with us this summer?

Charley: Chelsea poured a lot into me after last summer and I felt called to come serve this summer. It was definitely a God call.

Cassi: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Charley: I want be in music ministry or maybe start a ministry after I attend Oral Roberts and hopefully do mission work with it (with a grin and a giggle she added: with a husband!)

Cassi: What can WM friends pray for you about?

Charley: That I would be obedient after summer to do what God calls me to, whether in music or whatever, that I will follow the plans the Lord has for me.

Charley is someone who is quite adorable. I find her to be careful with her words and actions, and a girl whose learning to embrace all God has created her to be. She shines the most when behind her guitar or the keyboard, her unique voice engaging the listener instantly. I have been blessed by her help in using her growing talent of photography to help capture the week for campers! She soaks up life and all it offers and bleeds that life onto those she surrounds herself with. In whatever Charley does, she is meeting success, I believe because she's figuring out that the more she leans into Christ, the more she glorifies and becomes like Him!

May we each be encouraged to lean into Jesus a little more today!

Christmas in May

After being at the GIC Conference in February, one special group of people had a heart to help WM in whatever way they could. With the list of our household and pantry needs in hand, this group of people filled a car full (and then some) of practical needs (like TP!) and sent Driver Bob to bless us. Feels like Christmas in May!Christmas in may

Christmas in may 2Being missionary staff means we don't always know how we will be provided for, though we are confident God does provide! We've seen Him, on countless occasions, give toward our needs often using complete strangers. From tennis shoes and flip flops (in just the right sizes!) to Wendy's or Ingles gift cards to the bigger things like vehicles, we get taken care of…in His timeline! He does it through both the oblivious and the intentional people alike.

If you are awaiting God's provision, don't lose heart. He sees your need and is in process! If you are stressing about a need, stop twirling in anxious circles, lay your burden down in the hands of a trustworthy God, and rest! He's going to rock your socks off!

I had to

I know I said yesterday that I may not share in this space because we are at the 3CA conference, but I had to!SnowyThe day has been quite blustery, but where the day lacked in warmth, the speakers and people gathered here made up for it!  After I slid into my first morning class, breathless and late, then got over the "Oh, stink, Tegan's clothes are here with us, not there with him" bit I was able to fully embrace all that God is doing through the teaching and worship and connection. The thing about a conference like this is that there is so much deep, good, intriguing information being poured out, it takes some settling in our brains before we can really get what we heard!  After some settling takes place, know that there will be some sharing in this place because I don't want to hoard the blessings all to myself!

Then there was the opening session last night:Stage

Lights  My heart engaged in the worship in ways it has been craving and I didn't even realize! The band led us in sincere and engaging worship that was refreshing and powerful, God's church joining together in song!

Then, our speaker was introduced!  None other than Jeff Foxworthy!Jeff 1

Jeff 2After giving us the gift of laughter (and we were rollin'!), he got serious for a few minutes and shared what God was doing in and around him.Jeff 3    I couldn't help but be impressed by his humility and down-to-earthness! His willingness to use his platform to bring God glory is refreshing, as his tenderness toward God! We also enjoyed hearing from his wife Gregg who shared her experience of finding God as a teenager at a camp.GreggWhat's beautiful about this whole gig is that God's purposes are accomplished through such a vast assortment of people, in such a vast assortment of places but with a single unity of faith in Him! It blows my mind! But delights my heart!  Yeah…we are having a kickin' time at conference!  Group

Bigger than we Imagined!

Fot=rest    I find this pattern crazy: we pray~God moves~we're surprised…by how extravagantly He does so! Pretty silly, really! Nonetheless (love that word!) that's how we tend to operate!  Tonight was one of those times for us as staff!  We have covered this week in prayer (as I know many of you are doing…thx) and continue to do so at every turn, yet we found ourselves delightfully surprised tonight at the evidence of God's powerful work in the lives of those with us this week, even those among our staff!RagsTonight's worship, teaching and footwash went further than anyone expected.  The tears, the encouragement, the steps toward group unity, the brokenness that began to take place in lives…all this, to the extent that it went, surprised and overwhelmed each of us in a way that only God can do!Foot
