Awesomeness Takes the Stage | Intro 2017

Awesomeness Takes the Stage Block

Each summer, we like to spotlight each of our summer staff to help you get to know them a bit more! We call these spotlights AWESOMENESS TAKES THE STAGE. We just didn’t feel it was right to hog our staff all to ourselves — we want you to know how awesome they are too!

As we share fun pictures of them and a bit about who they are, we also like to share about the jobs they are doing all summer long. To kick start our ATS 2017, I want to introduce you to our Media Collective. Beginning tomorrow I will introduce you to each individual on our Media Co team, but today I wanted to let you know about them and see a couple behind the scenes pictures of them doing their thing!

Media Co 1

For the first year ever, we have a whole team of people working hard to capture the heart of each camp week through photography and videography. Each person is at a different place in their experience and knowledge, but each one brings their own personal perspective to the job, helping us better share the camp experience with others and helping them build their portfolios and experiences!

4 Media Co

Media Co spend their days capturing, editing and producing content for the campers to take home with them as well as helping us spread the word about what God is doing through Whisper Mountain Camp. Our Media Co help tell the story of God encountering teens through outdoor adventure and God’s personal whispers!

To say I’m excited to have them working with us this summer is an understatement! I can’t wait to begin introducing them to you — starting tomorrow! See you then!

Do you fit the bill?

2014-Summer-Interns-HmPG-BlockNinjas behind a camera. Sleuths catching the big and little moments. Days and nights spent with incredible people. The great outdoors. Spending your skillz to create various media for campers and the promotion of Whisper Mountain. Good food. Housing. A life-changing summer of adventure and personal growth.

Whisper Mountain is looking to have an intern (or two) join our summer staff team. Ideally this person has their own equipment (camera + computer) and has some experience in the photography and/or videography realm. Those having graduated high school by summer 2014 or older are welcome to apply! Check out the promo video below to see an example of how your work would be used. (If you watch this and say in your head "I can do better than that!" please apply! We need you!)

If you are not in the market for such a summer job, could you look around and spread the word to others who may be?! My sanity thanks you!

Contact the Whisper Mountain office at 828.479.2993 or email me at Cassi(at)WhisperMountain(dot)org with any questions. Apply to be an intern here!

Thanks for reading today! Go have a great day!

November in Pictures

I'm still struggling to believe we are in December already. Looking back through November's pictures, they seemed so long ago. Time is funny like that! Work filled our days as usual, but with a little more freedom and the beginnings of what we are calling Field Trip Friday. Little adventures hiking our 130 acres! With all the leaves gone, the views are bigger and the hiking easier…and a little more stress free for me. I don't worry about happening upon any venomous snakes. The bears, eh…they don't worry me!!

As the first week of December closes, I hope you're finding the hope of Christmas already moving your hearts! Happy Weekending, friends!

Awesomeness Takes the Stage // Charley

Charley left her mark with us when she came as a camper last year! She:

Charley-5// is one of the three girl GIT's (Guides In Training) with us this summer //

Charley-2// is Captain America's wife //

Charley-1// helps lead our campers in worship each week //

Charley-3// graces the stage with the Bros on Ice Band at WM //

Charley-4// enjoys capturing memories behind and in front of the camera //

Charley-6// takes the investment she's received and pours into others //

Charley-7// allows adversity to shape her into God's tool of beauty //
A-peek-inside
Cassi: What is your favorite verse?

Charley: Song of Songs 4:7 "You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you."

Cassi: Why did you want to be a GIT with us this summer?

Charley: Chelsea poured a lot into me after last summer and I felt called to come serve this summer. It was definitely a God call.

Cassi: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Charley: I want be in music ministry or maybe start a ministry after I attend Oral Roberts and hopefully do mission work with it (with a grin and a giggle she added: with a husband!)

Cassi: What can WM friends pray for you about?

Charley: That I would be obedient after summer to do what God calls me to, whether in music or whatever, that I will follow the plans the Lord has for me.

Charley is someone who is quite adorable. I find her to be careful with her words and actions, and a girl whose learning to embrace all God has created her to be. She shines the most when behind her guitar or the keyboard, her unique voice engaging the listener instantly. I have been blessed by her help in using her growing talent of photography to help capture the week for campers! She soaks up life and all it offers and bleeds that life onto those she surrounds herself with. In whatever Charley does, she is meeting success, I believe because she's figuring out that the more she leans into Christ, the more she glorifies and becomes like Him!

May we each be encouraged to lean into Jesus a little more today!

unexpected and unpredictable

Clear blue Yesterday I said there was more to come today!  Oh yes. And this blessing is one that came out of the clear blue. Like one of those that-was-completely-God types! And is more of a personal blessing rather than the whole WM Team blessing!

Here's where the story starts (I tried to condense!):

Apple computer My personal computer is an Apple and my work computer is not! There are times I need to be able to do work for camp at home in order to balance all I do effectively, but I can't because my Apple does not have the Photoshop program my office computer has. Photoshop, being pretty pricey, hasn't been an option for me. But it's something I've really been wanting/needing.

There's a company called Tech Soup that allows non-profits (like Whisper Mountain) to get programs of all kinds at way-reduced prices. It's been great for us in the past, but we can only apply for programs every two years. Well, we have arrived at that time again, and they have the whole CS5 package (the big enchilada design program that Photoshop is included in!) for pennies comparatively! SO of course we applied! Just before we left for our missions conference, we received word from Tech Soup that we would not be approved to receive the CS5 package. Adobe will not allow the discount if it is a Christian organization…sound like prejudice? oh, yeah. it is! After being angry (and disheartened), I decided there wasn't much I could do and moved on, planning to "make do" as I had been.

BoothWhile standing at the WM Booth at the mission's conference, I engaged in conversation with a lady I only barely knew and who was holding a camera. (I often engage in shop talk with other photographers…fun and I learn a lot!) We discussed her lense and computer programs and then we said farewell.

Computer programs The following day I received a phone call from Patti that she was handed two computer programs that were to be given to me. My friendly photographer had given Photoshop and Lightroom! Oh my goodness. I could hardly believe my ears! I was so.excited! I hadn't even mentioned my desire or need or even the kind of computer I used during the conversation with her! Not only was I getting the program I wanted/needed in Mac version, I was given another program I never had the guts to hope for but is very useful for photographers/in the making. Oh, my goodness! Isn't that just like God? He gives, but bigger than we expect! When I had given up believing this tiny little detail of a computer program was even possible, he threw it my way. And with a cherry on top! Thank you KF for your generous giving! God used you to bless me in big ways!

Cw pic    I will never get over His extravagant, unexpected, unpredictable love. And I will never get over how quickly and frequently I give up on Him.

making an acquaintance with a barn

Tb 9 Old buildings, books, furniture pieces, trinkets, tools…these captivate my attention when I am around them.  Almost always I imagine how the piece was used, how it may have looked in its prime, even the people whose stories are woven into them.  Our tobacco barn at camp has long held my interest, but I have been leary of stepping foot inside its worn walls. For good reasons…looks like it could collapse at any moment and snakes are known to enjoy its many hiding places.

Not too long ago, I was sent on a mission that required me to take pictures of some equipment we were going to sell on Craigs List.  The equipment was–you guessed it–inside the barn. (eek!) I didn't go there alone, but I did go. And I thoroughly enjoyed making the acquaintaince with a small piece of history!

Tb 6
Tb 7    I don't know the names of those who built this barn or hung up their tobacco leaves to dry, but their stories seem somehow still alive in each board that's standing! Their stories, in a small way, are intertwining with our stories as we go about our business at camp. The connection to the past brings a sort of comfort to the present. The hope of the present brings an anticipation of the future.

Swarms of Fun!

Amidst all the work we do at camp, we do tend to squeeze in some fun!  But it's probably not the fun you are used to (remember, we're in smalltown USA!!) Yellow-jackets-1Part of an ongoing battle (and hazard) around the camp are yellow jacket nests in the ground…everywhere.  The boys are always in the danger zone as they mow and weedwack because they don't know until it's too late that the lovely little evils have started a new nest and are pretty possessive and protective of it! (pretty funny to watch them screaming up the road as they are chased by angry yellow jackets!) Well, a new nest was discovered.  Somehow, it was decided that I needed to get a picture of the swarm of yellow jackets after the mower passed over the nest!  I thought it would be amazing to have the sun gleaming with the swarm swarming.  So…we planned and prepared! Yellow-jackets-4

Yellow-jackets-5One brave Ramsey would be hoodied up, would floor the mower over the top of the nest, and I would be in place to catch the swarm with my camera.  Just picture all of us staff outside, most at a smart & safe distance, watching this "taunt the yellow jackets" fun taking place!Yellow-jackets-6

Yellow-jackets-2Well, Ramsey floored it, as planned. The yellow jackets were spitting angry as planned.  But the photographer (ahem, that'd be me!) was found running and screaming up the road as unplanned. Sounded something like this, "Shaaauuuunnnn, get 'em off me! Ouch! Get 'em off me! Hurry!" Three little zings later, I was frustrated that I missed the shot I imagined capturing, but laughing because it was a kickin' good time!

Hey, I faired better than my man a couple months back…half his face was swollen for a couple days!Swollen face Yeah, it's okay that you think we're crazy!!
