Being a Foodie is Super Spiritual

Staying Encouraged with WM Staff

Written by Patti Paul

Patti and Ms Bay in the Kitchen at Whisper Mountain Camp

Food. I must confess, I think about food much more than I’d prefer. Being the WM Head Cook is honestly not my favorite WM task, however, I recognize the importance of food for our guests as it provides daily nourishment and represents friendship, community and welcome.  If you’ve been to Whisper Mountain maybe you’ve experienced the “voted #1 favorite meal” – Poppyseed Chicken.  However you may prefer the Grilled Pork Chops or the fun Fiesta Bowl! Yum! So, tell me, what is your favorite food at WM, or anywhere?

Universal Love of Food at Whisper Mountain Camp

In the Gospels, food is mentioned about 90 times. Luke’s gospel is full of stories of Jesus eating with people. When God created humans He articulated the human body to require the need of food for energy,  growth, repair, and warmth.  Lack of proper daily nutrients will cause malnutrition and will lead to a variety of health problems and ultimate death.

The love of food is universal!  In fact, did you know that Americans spend more than $60 billion annually on nutrition and weight loss products? In the past 12 years, over 5,000 publishers produced 200,000 cookbooks. There’s also a plethora of food information available on social media and tv chefs. The human race seems obsessed with food and over indulging in it.  In the end, most nutritionists agree that eating a daily, balanced diet of small portions of healthy food will provide ample energy, keep off those extra pounds, and prevent many lifelong diseases.

Fellowship around the Table Outdoors

On occasion, Marty and I have the privilege of traveling on behalf of camp ministry.  We have found it to be true, that whenever we meet up with friends of the ministry, both new or old, our time is automatically planned around a table surrounded by delicious food, snacks, or dessert. Very sweet fellowship is automatically produced in this setting. Valued time spent together with others deepens our relationships together and gives us the encouragement we need as well.

Dining with Friends at Whisper Mountain Cmap

Food connects people together with traditions, memorable moments of celebration, gatherings of family and friends, and turns strangers into friends all while sharing a meal and conversation. Knowing food was a daily requirement for man, Jesus used meals in his earthly ministry as an expression of grace, community, and His mission. He sought to save the lost and carry on a personal relationship with all, and He still does.

2019 Study Retreat Teen in The Word

God’s Word feeds us spiritually, encourages, convicts, directs, and helps us grow to be more like Him. I truly believe that nourishing my spiritual health must be given even more importance than my daily food. Without Him I will be spiritually deprived, dried up and useless in the life He’s given me. I’m sure you relate. Many times busy life and interruptions can shortchange my daily quiet time with Him.   Growing in my spiritual relationship requires:

  • regular scripture study
  • communication with Him throughout my day
  • keeping a short list of forgiveness of my faults
  • and listening & looking for Him to reveal Himself to me in big and small ways.

I can tell the difference in the days I devote quality time of building my relationship with Him by my personal attitude, reactions to those I am in contact with and in my general well being.

God's Word and Food at Whisper Mountain Camp

Can I ask, how are you doing at making Him a priority in your daily walk? Here’s a couple places the Word uses food figuratively and practically:

  • “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good, Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”  Psalm 34:8
  • “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” 3 John 1:2
  • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matt 5:6
  • “And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Acts 2:42

I sincerely hope you will practice enjoying God’s Word as much or more than the good food enjoyed in your daily living! Think of the satisfaction and joy you’ll experience if you do!

she coordinates chaos beautifully

Patti-at-Whisper-Mountain-1

Whisper Mountain would not be functioning if it weren’t for our Chaos Coordinator, Patti! What you don’t know (unless you hold a job position like she does!) is she works her tail off in the behind the scenes operational portion of WM, aka the not so fun part of this camp gig! If you’ve come to camp you’ve probably seen her in the kitchen ( yes, she’s responsible for such goodness ANNNDDD she is accepting applications!!!!!) or hustling on her golf cart to take care of office stuff in between all the cooking.

Patti-at-Whisper-Mountain-Dork-Ball

She leads quietly, having sacrificed a bunch to be serving alongside her man. The road she has chosen would make the average woman bitter, but she has allowed God to make her better by choosing love instead. And she beams with love.

Patti-at-Whisper-Mountain-2

Patti is an encouraging friend, remembering details about people to later bless them unexpectedly. She carries burdens she could easily walk away from. She makes the most of situations, allowing God to use her gifts and talents in ways that bring Him glory. She humbly carries on when no one sees her struggle, affirms her worth, or praises her work.

We are celebrating Patti today. Would you like to join in by leaving an encouraging word for her? The perfect gift for her birthday — cause she’s not thinking they are really worth celebrating anymore!!!!

Have a great day, friends!

can we say CRUNCH?

Marty Building Whisper Mountain CabinOn many levels, we are in crunch time here at Whisper Mountain. While we all feel it, I'm pretty sure Marty is bearing the greatest pressure just now. In a week's time this volunteer cabin needs to be ready to welcome our summer cook! Let's just stop there for a second–we have a summer cook! Can you rejoice with Patti please?! (We are down some helpers in the kitchen, so if you'd like to volunteer, contact us!)

Whisper Mountain Camp Cabin BuildMarty has been giving his all during the day, and paying for it during the night. Pure exhaustion these days and summer hasn't begun! Do pray for him!

Whisper Mountain Volunteer Cabin Build 1Standing on the front porch, the creek can be heard, as can the chorus of birds and countless other creatures of the woods. Quite peaceful and restoring! I'm already making plans for a personal retreat here this fall!

Shaun and Tegan at Whisper Mountain Cabin BuildThere will be much to share as time allows! Thank you for understanding the quiet of this space lately! Though you can't tell from where you're sitting, much is going on here and still much more to come! We hope you'll journey with us along the trail!

Captured Moment | Kitchen Divas

Whisper Mountain Kitchen DivasWhile the men have been building, these Kitchen Divas have been making delicious food for the teen group we've had with us and all the hungry builders! Together is better, especially when cooking at camp! They have as much fun as they work hard! Much like Marty and his ole pals, Patti loves having her girl pals around too! Uplifts the spirit to have friends around! Thanks Debbie Propp and Traci Lee for all your help and adding laughter to the kitchen!

Go have some fun with someone you haven't spent time with lately! You both will be glad you did!

Thanks for your time reading here! I'm so glad you pop in as often as you do!
Happy Weekending!

Woven 2014 in pictures

Woven at Whisper Mountain Header BlockWhat a weekend we had with the women as we gathered to be spiritually encouraged and try our hand at the art of basket weaving!

Woven at Whisper Mountain 1Some (one!) of us hated it, many of us loved it, almost all of us walked away feeling the sense of accomplishment and proud of our handiwork!

Woven at Whisper Mountain 5The teaching by Deb was uplifting as she offered gems of wisdom and gently challenged us in our walks with Christ.

Woven at Whisper Mountain 6Worship with Charley and Chelsea was completely renewing as we turned our hearts to the Ultimate Weaver of all of life!

Woven at Whisper Mountain 9Ruth and Renee were a strong sister team teaching us the art of basket weaving. We have such an appreciation for baskets and for their patience!

Woven at Whisper Mountain 2

Woven at Whisper Mountain 22Patti put together amazing meals, added her special touches on the whole event, and decorated the Hub to be a beautiful splash of happy and spring for our guests–as is her usual!

(I still was not feeling well and really only managed to take some really blurry/bad pictures! My apologies to you!)

Woven at Whisper Mountain 11While the company was fantastic, the art satisfying, the teaching uplifting, my very favorite part of the whole weekend was having both young and older women all in one place, sharing the whole experience together. Too often, in both the church and life, there is such a divide between the young and the old. We need each other, benefit from each other, are stronger with each other. My heart was made happy by such a sight!

Woven at Whisper Mountain 27Before the ladies left we gave them a few little goodies to put in their baskets, one of which was fudge from these amazing fudge makers over in the Raleigh area. If specialty fudge is your thang, or you're looking for something special for your upcoming something or rather, we highly recommend North Carolina Fudge! (whatever weight I've lost being sick has been kindly placed back on the hips thanks to these yummy morsels!)

Woven at Whisper Mountain 19Most of the crew here–aren't they beautiful! Don't they look so proud?! I love it! There's already chatter of next year's Woven! We weren't sure how this retreat would go, this being our first go at it, but we are very pleased with how well received it was! We look forward to next year. If you missed out this year, be planning to join us in 2015.

Upside Down & On His Way Down

Upside-down2
Upside-down1
We've been dragging ourselves along in some areas and feeling upside down in details the past few weeks (mostly Patti) as we prepare for the annual Whisper Mountain Board meeting. Last year's board meeting was held here at WM, but this year Marty will be traveling to Florida. The point is to reconnect the guys with all the happenings of the camp and then to help direct the moving forward of the ministry!
Upside-down3I know there will be a little breathing happening the next few days…a sort of dignified flopping in Patti's case!

If you would, please pray for Marty heading down to FL (and truck to hold up!), wisdom and great sharing of ideas, and a reigniting of excitement and passion for all the camp is about! These guys are awesome! We're glad they are on our team!

What team(s) are you a part of serving alongside of? Isn't it great to be a part of something with others who care about the same thing?! Happy Serving & Happy Day to you!

we practiced what we preach!

Slumbering-woodOur full-time staff just came off a first-ever staff retreat! We are pretty good about preaching it…get away into the quiet to find rest and refreshment and to hear God's whisper. We have it down, in word. We struggle as a unit to practice it! But we got away! We planned, we prayed, we played! Fabulous! Just hanging out and cracking up was a refreshing change from the on mission, get some work done atmostphere we are used to!

Staff-retreat-goof-chrisI'm already thinking ahead to the next one…this time all play and no work!

Staff-retreat-whole-groupHmn. Just what should we do?! (any interested sponsors?!)

***thank you to the generous folks allowing us to stay in their mountian home for the weekend! You are awesome, we are blessed! May God heap goodness down on you for loving us!***

just…amazing!

Decor-BlockWhisper Mountain recently held, for our third year, a Christmas dinner for our local church’s deacons! Since I am now a deacon’s wife (eek!), Patti worked hard to keep me a little more on the receiving end rather than the work end of things! She did a lovely job with decorating the place, didn’t she?
Amazing-Help

Aside from the usual help of the other full-time staff, she pulled in some great help both locally and not so locally! We thank the youth for their willingess in serving each guest with class and style! And Leann Peery & Delores Eland for their help in the preparing of food, seeing to last minute decorating details, and general moral support!Amazing-Food
Prime Rib Dinner and delicate desserts filled the tables (and our bellies!).

Amazing-FellowshipAnd of course the fellowship was the point of it all! These people, servants in the community and lovers of God and others, were the gems of the evening. How we, as a ministry and as individuals, have enjoyed being part of this community of believers!

Deacons, thank you for choosing Whisper Mountain as your place of celebration this season!

Shining in the Spotlight Today!

Patti     I believe we, as a camp, would be sinking in details if it weren't for this lovely woman!  Patti has given herself the title of Paper Shuffler and Chaos Coordinator and she excels at both…and then some!

Some of her other titles include (but definitely not limited to) Kitchen Help, Laundry Maid, Director of Oh-So-Much (though she never claims it!), Event Planner, Problem Solver, Humming Bird Feeder Restocker, Closet Cleaner, Building Decorator, Receptionist, Accountant, Organizer of Staff & Projects & Everything Else, Mom, Grammy, Wife, Chai Tea Drinker, Friend, Daughter and Woman after God's Heart!

Bottom line…Patti serves. Always. Even when it's the last thing she'd like to be doing; even when she can hardly stand on two feet; even when the founder and director of WM (aka: her husband) drives her batty; even when her head is spinning so much it hurts; even when she'd rather be sitting in a chair at the beach and not in front of that bless-ed computer screen!!

It does so happen that she is my  mom (in case you are new around here!).  But even if she wasn't, I would still want you to know that Whisper Mountain has God's favor because of people like her giving everything to proclaim Him!

Thank you, Patti! (thank you, Mom!)
